Prisoners' Round | Vincent van Gogh | 1890 Johannes Vermeer which often explore the tensionAbout the artwork: Prisoners' Round (1890) by Vincent van Gogh is a haunting depiction of confinement, painted during his time at the Saint Rmy asylum. The scene shows a group of inmates walking in a closed circle within a high walled courtyard, their heads bowed, forming a loop of hopeless repetition. The palette is muted and cold, amplifying the oppressive mood, while the towering brick walls seem to trap not only the figures but also the viewer.
